Top Ten Date Movies

10. Almost Famous
This is a perfect blend of the poignant and the funny and yet it doesn’t get too heartfelt nor does the humour fall into the dirty category. Probably best described as a coming of age movie, you can’t help but feel for lead character William Miller, a high-school student who gets caught up with an almost famous rock and roll band. Classically cool, it’s the type of movie that will entertain both of you equally.

9. How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days
We all make silly little mistakes in the dating game and the best thing about this movie is that it gives you a chance to laugh at them, and in turn, at yourself. Both Mathew McConaughey and Kate Hudson are as charming as ever and the dating faux pas visited will make you cringe, laugh, and cry all at the same time. How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days may be a little bit more chick flick than action packed, but the humour will be enough for two.

8. Shrek
This spoof on the classic fairy tale romances is a perfect mix of love and comedy. Don’t be fooled by the cartoon like appearance of Shrek and his Donkey friend, most of the jokes are aimed at adults and when you throw in Mike Myers at his best you know it’s going to be a winner.

7. Titanic
Sure it’s a long and drawn out movie and we all know how it’s going to end, but the ladies will go crazy over the gooey eyed moments between Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, while the men will enjoy the action packed sequence when the boat finally goes down. On top of that, it’s a three hour long marathon which means there will be plenty of time to get “closer” throughout it.

6. Never Been Kissed
Full of funny moments that will leave you reminiscing about the uncomfortable happenings in High School; this film is a great way to open up conversation about each other’s teenage years, school life, and your first kiss. The chemistry between lead actors Drew Barrymore and Michael Vartan is super sweet and David Arquette provides just the right amount of comedy.

5. Spellbound
If you don’t shy away from documentaries, this cult hit spelling-bee docco has so many endearingly eccentric characters that you’ll be feeling well and truly charmed by the end of it. And better yet, it can act as a prompt to talk about your childhood, your family, and your geekiest ambitions – perfect date fodder to chew over.

4. Four Weddings and Funeral
You know you’re onto a good date movie when the film you’re watching stars Hugh Grant. Making romance sizzle is what this British lad does best and in Four Weddings and a Funeral he’s at his comedic best. This movie pokes fun at relationships and commitment but has its serious moments to get you thinking. It may be a little dated but the gags continue to entertain.

3. Casablanca
For those who love the classics and don’t mind black and white cinema, this is the ultimate must see. You can’t help but get lost in the story of unrequited love set amongst the backdrop of the Second World War, and chances are that you will be familiar with more than one line in the film. Released way back in 1943, this movie’s old world charm encapsulates the bravery, courage, beauty and love of a romance that will melt any heart.

2. Jerry Maguire
Sporting analogies, romantic moments, Tom Cruise, Rene Zellweger – it’s a perfect recipe for a date movie as there’s a little something for every one. The behind the scenes look at the competitive sports world will keep the boys interested and the girls will no doubt melt over the classic lines “You complete me” and “You had me at hello”. Cuba Gooding Jnr provides the laughs which will be a great ice breaker if you’re a little nervous and there will be enough cute moments to keep the romance alive.

1. There’s Something About Mary
Downright funny and humour that both women and men can enjoy, this movie will give you plenty to chat about. Cameron Diaz plays the ultimate girlfriend and Ben Stiller the man who has been in love with her ever since an unfortunate event on Prom night. There are laughs after laughs and classic scenes that will have you talking for months to come – we promise you’ll never think of hair mouse the same way ever again. It’s not short on the romance either without losing that all important fun factor.

So there you have it, the best of the best date movies to enjoy with someone special. There were so many to choose from that we are sure we’ve omitted some classic must-watch films that you love. Do you have any suggestions of what should have made it onto our list? Tell us what your favourite date movie is!
